Addressing Food Insecurity in Our Community
As the holiday season approaches, the Middlesex College Community Resource Hub and Food Pantry is calling on the community to support students struggling with food insecurity. In recognition of Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week from November 17-24, the pantry is seeking donations of nonperishable food items such as canned proteins, pasta, rice, and even reusable shopping bags. With over 500 students registered since the semester began and 1,623 visits recorded since reopening, the need has never been more pressing.
The Impact of Community Support
The importance of this initiative cannot be overstated. Amanda Lyons, community resource coordinator at Middlesex College, emphasizes that many students are challenged with basic needs while attempting to further their education. A student shared their gratitude, stating, "The Hub and Pantry program allowed me to eat when I would not have otherwise." Such personal stories highlight how essential these resources are in helping students persist in their academic journeys.
A Comprehensive Approach to Wellness
Since its establishment in 2018, the Community Resource Hub has expanded its services beyond food, offering personal hygiene products and cleaning supplies at no cost. Their mission is to empower students by ensuring they have access to essential resources, which is crucial for fostering both academic success and retention. The recently received Hunger-Free Campus Act Grant enables the pantry to purchase food and other essentials, further enhancing their offerings to students in need.
How You Can Help Make a Difference
If you wish to make a difference, donations can be dropped off in designated bins around the Middlesex College Edison campus. There’s also a secure online donation link available through the Middlesex College Foundation. Every contribution, no matter how small, helps to alleviate food insecurity and supports the college’s commitment to creating a caring community.
Every Item Counts
As a community, we have a unique opportunity to come together and support our students during this critical time. By donating, you are not merely providing food; you are contributing to the overall well-being of your neighbors and ensuring that every student can focus on their studies, dreams, and future without the heavy burden of hunger. Let’s show that we care and that no student has to face these challenges alone!
