Revitalizing Community Spaces: The Story Behind Hackettstown's Upgraded Courts
On August 1st, Hackettstown will unveil its newly upgraded pickleball and tennis courts on Warren Street, marking a significant turnaround for the once-deteriorating facility. Originally built in the 1970s and operated by the Hackettstown Board of Education, these courts faced an uncertain future, teetering on the brink of elimination in 2015 due to high maintenance costs.
However, community advocates recognized the value of maintaining the only public outdoor tennis facility in the area. The Hackettstown Recreation Department stepped in, taking ownership of the courts in May 2016 and initiating necessary repairs to revive the space. Their proactive measures have now culminated in a full-scale renovation, emphasizing the commitment to outdoor recreational activities that engage residents of all ages.
A Cost-Effective Solution for Recreation
The town's decision to manage the renovation in-house rather than contracting the work out saved roughly $180,000. By utilizing local talents and resources, Hackettstown was able to stretch its budget effectively, with a total expenditure of approximately $120,000. This includes a $70,000 Recreational Improvement Grant received in 2024, enabling a comprehensive upgrade.
New Features to Welcome All Players
The renovated facility now boasts three pickleball courts and two tennis courts, catering to the growing popularity of these sports. Officials encourage everyone, from seasoned athletes to newcomers, to take advantage of this accessible recreation space. Court usage rules, such as required tennis shoes and a one-hour play limit when others are waiting, are designed to ensure safety and fair access for all.
As the Hackettstown community prepares to celebrate their new recreational hub, it serves as a reminder of the power of grassroots advocacy in preserving public spaces. Everyone is invited to enjoy this revitalized facility, embodying the spirit of community and the importance of outdoor physical activity.
