Celebrating Excellence: The Return of NJHS to Sparta Middle School
SPARTA, NJ – A momentous occasion unfolded at Sparta Middle School in April with the induction ceremony of the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) for the Class of 2026. This event marks a long-awaited revival of the NJHS in the school, having been previously disbanded due to the lack of an advisor. Thanks to the dedication of advisor Catherine Jennings, the program has been successfully reinstated, enriching the educational experience for local students.
Highlighting Student Achievement
The ceremony honored 71 seventh and eighth graders, each selected for their remarkable academic achievements and adherence to the NJHS’s five pillars: scholarship, leadership, service, citizenship, and character. Principal Frank Ciaburri remarked on the students' commitment, stating, "Each of these students has met rigorous academic standards and successfully demonstrated the five pillars of NJHS membership. Their dedication to excellence both inside and outside the classroom is commendable." Jennings also shared her pride in the students, emphasizing the significance of the evening, “It is such a wonderful night when you can recognize the amazing achievements of our talented students.”
Guiding Future Leaders
The NJHS ceremony included student-led activities highlighting their values and dedication. Students conducted a candlelight ceremony, with significant contributions from peers such as Sophia Iwanowski, who led the Pledge of Allegiance, while others performed the National Anthem. Five aspirants to the NJHS lit ceremonial candles, symbolizing the attributes required for membership and demonstrating their commitment to these ideals.
Advice from the Existing Honor Society
A highlight of the event was a speech by Hayden Kopco, President of the Sparta High School National Honor Society and one of the top students in his class. He imparted wisdom to the inductees, encouraging them to embrace high school with the same passion and work ethic that earned them their NJHS status. Kopco said, “My advice for you is that once you get to your freshman year of high school, keep your foot on the gas. Don’t slow down; stay determined to achieve your hopes and dreams.”

The National Junior Honor Society program aims to foster not only academic excellence but also a spirit of volunteerism among its members, encouraging them to contribute positively to their community.
