A Night of Celebration for Sparta Girls Volleyball
SPARTA, NJ - In an emotional and spirited Senior Night game, the Sparta girls volleyball team made sure to honor their two outstanding seniors, Grace Mathurin and Val Kopco, while delivering a commanding performance against Blair. The team clinched the match triumphantly in straight sets, with scorelines reading 25-13 and 25-11.
Head Coach Caitlin Jozefczyk praised the seniors, reflecting that, “Grace and Val are the epitome of what every coach looks for in a leader,” highlighting the strong presence they’ve both brought to the program. Their leadership doesn't just manifest in their athletic abilities but also in their unwavering support for their teammates, shaping a culture of positivity and commitment within the group.
The Early Dominance
Sparta's victory began with a strong 7-0 lead in the first set, buoyed by the impressive play of freshman Olivia Stanton. The outside hitter's early kills set the tone, effectively silencing Blair. Freshman Kylie Snyder added to the offensive burst with three aces, as the team showcased their robust attacking prowess.
Grace Shines on Senior Night
The spotlight shifted to Grace Mathurin in the second set. Coach Jozefczyk made a strategic lineup change, allowing Mathurin to step into her preferred outside hitter role. Mathurin expressed her joy, stating, “Being on the outside has always felt natural… getting the opportunity to play there was amazing.” Her performance was a testament to her skills, ending the second set with two kills and two aces, propelling Sparta to another commanding lead.
A Family Bond on the Court
Adding to the night's magic, Mathurin shared the court with her sister, Nakia. “Playing alongside my sister meant the world,” she said, emphasizing how special moments like these enrich the experience of being an athlete.
Looking Ahead
With this win, Sparta improved to five victories this season, making it clear that this team has formed deep bonds, both on and off the court. As they prepare for their final matches this week, the significance of their shared experiences weighs heavily on the seniors.
Kopco acknowledged, “This volleyball program means so much to me. Since I was a freshman, this team has always been so inclusive.” Both she and Mathurin are poised to take the lessons learned and relationships built into their next chapters, but they will undoubtedly miss the camaraderie that made their high school experience enriching.
