Sparta High School's Unique Sisterhood in Sports
SPARTA, NJ – A heartwarming trend is unfolding at Sparta High School, where the girls' volleyball team and the cheerleading squad are showcasing a special bond: sibling connections among the players. With seven sets of sisters on the rosters, these teams exemplify an inspiring legacy of family involvement and encouragement in school sports.
“It is so wonderful to have such a legacy in my program,” enthused volleyball coach Caitlin Jozefczyk. “It allows me to get to know their families better, and the parents are so instrumental in helping the program to thrive.” Jozefczyk emphasized the benefits that come from this familial connection, explaining how having siblings on the team enhances communication, community support, and even familiarity with players who aren't yet part of the team.
Among the volleyball sisters are Mya and Sophia Iwanowski, Nakia and Grace Mathurin, Alexa and Kylie Snyder, and Nikki and Allie Sucich. This legacy extends to older sisters as well, like Victoria Sucich, who graduated in 2026 and continues sharing her experience with her younger siblings. Additionally, current player Birana Acker boasts an older sister who also played under Coach Jozefczyk, reinforcing the strong family ties that have developed over the years.
On the cheerleading side, the Dash sisters, Sahanna and Kareena, join Ava and Alayna Torres, and Amina and Isabella Zapatero in celebrating their sisterhood. The girls reported how this connection enhances their experience: “It’s great to make new memories together” and “It’s amazing to be on the sidelines together.” With a diverse mixture of ages, including Alayna as a senior, the cheer team is excited for more shared moments over the coming years.

Coach Jozefczyk expressed how the family-oriented environment lets her continue to coach her players even after graduation. “These players don't stop being ‘my girls’ when they leave Sparta,” she said.
