The American Red Cross has declared a national blood crisis for only the second time in its history, highlighting a severe shortage of blood supplies that is affecting hospitals across the United States. With blood donations falling to a four-year summer low, the need for blood donations has never been more critical. Why is There a Blood Supply Shortage?
Several factors have contributed to the low blood donations this summer. From extreme heat and poor air quality to the impact of foodborne illnesses, these environmental challenges have discouraged potential donors from attending blood drives. According to Paul Sullivan, senior vice president of donor services for the American Red Cross, “If just three more donors gave at each blood drive this summer, we could help the blood supply rebound and ensure hospitals have the blood products they need.” It’s a call to action for local residents in areas like Andover Borough, Sparta Township, and Newton to step up and help their communities.

Those eligible to donate can easily schedule an appointment through the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit RedCrossBlood.org, or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). The Red Cross is incentivizing donations; individuals who donate before the end of July will receive a Fandango movie ticket valued at up to $15, while those donating in August will get a $20 Amazon gift card. Such incentives ensure that donating blood recognizes and encourages participation while addressing the urgent need for Type O blood, which is currently at a dangerously low level.
