Hollywood Joins Forces with New Jersey
In a significant investment poised to transform the local economy, Paramount has been designated as a Studio Partner by the New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA). This designation follows the announcement of a 10-year lease at the soon-to-be-completed 1888 Studios in Bayonne, a facility expected to become one of the largest film and television studios in the Northeastern United States.
With the NJEDA’s Film and Digital Media Tax Credit program backing, Paramount stands to benefit from a generous 40% tax credit on qualified production expenses for future projects filmed in New Jersey. Governor Phil Murphy has highlighted how such incentives are key to attracting major players in the entertainment industry, stating, “New Jersey’s competitive tax incentive program, deep talent pool, and diverse locations are proving to be successful in attracting leading entertainment companies, such as Paramount, to the state.” This synergy aims to drive not only job creation but also economic growth throughout the region.
What Does 1888 Studios Bring to the Table?
The upcoming 1888 Studios project, developed by Togus Urban Renewal LLC, will feature 23 innovative sound stages and encompass over 350,000 square feet of production support space. Designed by the firm Gensler to simulate the nostalgic feel of Golden Age Hollywood, the studio's expansive layout will cater to numerous production needs while incorporating outdoor amenities, a waterfront park, and ample office spaces.
According to NJEDA CEO Tim Sullivan, Paramount’s long-term commitment cements New Jersey’s stature as a national hub for film and television production—demonstrating a shifting landscape where local communities benefit from global industry leaders.
The Broader Impact on Local Communities
This investment not only symbolizes growth in the entertainment sector but also greatly affects local economies in towns across Sussex County, NJ, and beyond. Small businesses, local vendors, and job creation are anticipated to flourish as Paramount ramps up production capabilities right in the heart of New Jersey. As noted by Andy Gordon, Paramount’s chief strategy officer, “Scaling our production and expanding our slate of world-class entertainment is central to our long-term strategy.”
As the film industry continues to evolve post-pandemic, New Jersey is set to thrive collectively with its entertainment partners, which could significantly enhance the state's employment rates and bolster local businesses across key regions, particularly in Northern NJ.
Looking Ahead: A Vibrant Future for New Jersey Entertainment
The establishment of 1888 Studios indeed places New Jersey at the forefront of the entertainment landscape. Paramount’s commitment serves as a strong signal to other media giants that New Jersey is ready and willing to support film productions. With resources and tax incentives available to encourage more projects, the future looks bright for film and television enthusiasts, local workers, and those eager to see their communities reap the benefits.
The combination of location, tax incentives, and a growing creative workforce makes this a pivotal moment for New Jersey's film industry. As developments continue, community members may soon find themselves with unique opportunities in a budding and vibrant market.
