A Celebration of Service: Morris County Honors Its Veterans
On the evening of November 5th, the Morris County Board of County Commissioners will stand united in tribute at the Annual Veterans Day Ceremony, honoring the sacrifices and service of local veterans. This special event will take place at 6:30 p.m. in the Commissioners’ Public Meeting Room located at 10 Court St., Morristown, NJ, and is open for the entire community to attend.
Recognizing Local Heroes
As part of the ceremony, seven veterans will be awarded Distinguished Military Service Medals, honoring their dedication and contributions to the armed forces. Among the recipients are Vincent J. DeCaro of Morris Plains and Christopher Gardner from Morristown, highlighting the hometown heroes who have served in various capacities.
This year also coincides with the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Marine Corps, a milestone that will be acknowledged through a special tribute to the members of the 2nd Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment, stationed at Picatinny Arsenal. Attendees can look forward to not only reflecting on the valiant past but also recognizing the continued importance of military service within the community.
Honoring a Civil War Legend
A standout feature of the evening will be the posthumous recognition of Cpl. Charles Fern Hopkins, Sr., a Civil War hero awarded the Medal of Honor. Often referred to as “Boonton’s Grand Old Man,” Hopkins was not only a military figure but also a civic leader dedicated to public service. His legacy will be honored through a framed Resolution of Honor that will be presented to his great-grandson, Charlie Maraziti, during the ceremony.
Additionally, there will be a display of artifacts related to Hopkins, enriching the experience for attendees who come to learn about the history and service of those who fought bravely for their country.
Join the Movement: Operation Green Light
The ceremony will coincide with Operation Green Light, encouraging citizens, businesses, and schools to display green lights from November 4 through November 11. This campaign raises awareness about the services available to veterans and underscores the community's commitment to honoring their sacrifices.
As November 11 approaches, residents are encouraged to participate actively in showing appreciation for veterans, fostering a culture of gratitude that is essential in acknowledging their services and sacrifices.
For those unable to attend in person, the ceremony will be livestreamed on the county’s website and Facebook page, ensuring that everyone can partake in honoring the county’s veterans.
