Honoring Our Heroes: A Special Veterans Day Ceremony
MORRISTOWN, N.J. — This year’s Veterans Day in Morris County promises to be a poignant tribute as the local community gathers to honor the sacrifices and services of its veterans. The annual ceremony, hosted by the Morris County Board of County Commissioners, is set for Wednesday, November 5, at 6:30 p.m. in the Commissioners’ Public Meeting Room located at 10 Court St., Morristown. Residents are warmly invited to attend this important event, which honors those who have courageously served in the armed forces.
Celebrating Local Veterans
At this year’s ceremony, seven local veterans will be awarded the Morris County Distinguished Military Service Medals. These honorees include:
- Vincent J. DeCaro (Navy – Morris Plains)
- Christopher Gardner (Army – Morristown)
- Charles E. Johnson (Army/USAR – Dover)
- Robert Litrio (Army – Hanover Township)
- Ronald Pierantozzi (Navy – Pequannock)
- Aniceto Rivera (Army – Boonton Township)
- Samuel Y. Yuen (Navy – Randolph Township)
This recognition serves not only to acknowledge the bravery of these individuals but also to inspire the younger generations about the importance of service and commitment to the community.
Marine Corps' 250th Anniversary Celebrated
Reflecting on the rich history of the U.S. Marine Corps, the ceremony will also commemorate the 250th anniversary of this esteemed branch of the military. Members from the 2nd Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, stationed at Picatinny Arsenal, will be recognized for their ongoing commitment and valor, further solidifying the unique bond between the Marines and the local community.
A Heartfelt Tribute to a Civil War Hero
A highlight of the event will be the posthumous recognition of Cpl. Charles Fern Hopkins, Sr., a Civil War Medal of Honor recipient. Known affectionately as “Boonton’s Grand Old Man,” Hopkins dedicated his life to public service. His great-grandson, Charlie Maraziti, will accept a framed Resolution of Honor on behalf of the family, reminding us all of the valor embedded in our local history.
Joining Operation Green Light
This year’s ceremony also coincides with Operation Green Light, a nationwide initiative encouraging communities to display green lights from November 4 through November 11, symbolizing appreciation for veterans and raising awareness about available services. Residents across Sussex County NJ — from Andover Borough to Vernon Township — are invited to take part, lighting their homes and businesses to show support.
Engage and Celebrate
Residents are encouraged to arrive early to secure seating for the ceremony and participate in this meaningful occasion. The event will be livestreamed, ensuring that even those who cannot attend in person can join in this celebration of bravery and dedication.
As we approach Veterans Day, let us all take a moment to reflect on the sacrifices made by our brave men and women in uniform. Their stories, like the journeys of our local veterans, weave a rich tapestry of courage, fortitude, and resilience.
Morris County continues to demonstrate its commitment to honoring veterans, illustrating that their valor is not forgotten but deeply appreciated by the community.
