Sparta Team 5249 V 'Velocity' Shines at 2026 VEX World Championship
In a remarkable display of innovation and teamwork, the Sparta High School robotics team, known as Team 5249 V “Velocity,” recently represented Sparta at the 2026 VEX Robotics World Championship in St. Louis, Missouri. The team’s participation in this international event highlights their hard work and dedication, marking a significant moment for both the students and the broader Sparta community.
Hard Work Leads to World-Class Stage
With over 100 teams from 43 different countries, Velocity faced its toughest competition yet. Coach Mark Meola expressed immense pride in the accomplishments of his students, stating, “With our school district supporting such a superior program, our students have outperformed thousands of peers on an international scale.” This year marks the 15th for the Sparta robotics program, which has successfully led 37 teams to state championships.
Learning from Competition
Despite finishing with a 6-6 record, the team gained invaluable experience. “Every match taught us something new about how well we could collaborate, adapt, and improve,” said Ajay Persaud, one of the team’s mechanics. Co-Captain Logan Johnson echoed similar sentiments, noting the steep learning curve and the increased skills needed to compete at such a high level. “Although we didn’t reach the heights we aimed for, the journey was enriching and motivating for the entire team.”
Building a Legacy in Robotics
The impact of participating in the world championships stretches beyond the competition itself. It represents the dedication of students who commit five days a week to perfecting their mechanical design and programming in hopes of achieving excellence. “Being in a space filled with passion and innovation pushes you to strive for more,” said Eli Amiel, another team member. Their ongoing journey not only enhances their technical skills but also fosters teamwork, resilience, and problem-solving - essential life skills that extend far beyond the robotics arena.
Community and Future Aspirations
As a beacon of achievement, the Velocity team serves as an inspiration within the Sparta NJ community. They embody the spirit of perseverance and the pursuit of knowledge, reflecting the district’s commitment to a forward-thinking educational program. With their eyes set on future competitions, these young innovators are not just completing a season; they are building a legacy that will encourage the next generation of robotics enthusiasts in Sussex County, New Jersey.
