This free online resource allows residents of Sussex County, NJ, to delve into archival newspapers dating back to 1814, offering a unique window into the community's evolution over more than a century.
Empowering Community Connections With Accessible History
Made possible with a grant from the New Jersey State Library’s REV 250 initiative, the archive was launched on December 25, 2025, and is now available at https://sussexcounty.historyarchives.online/home. Residents can explore famous local publications such as the New Jersey Herald, Sussex Register, and Wantage Recorder, which have documented community life through periods of significant social change.
Tools to Discover Personal and Community Stories
Tara Schaberg, the Local History and Genealogy Librarian at SCLS, emphasized the importance of this archive. "By bringing local history online, we’re making it possible for everyone to explore these materials anytime, anywhere. The archive's powerful search tools can help users uncover fascinating stories, trace family and community history, and see how Sussex County has grown and changed over time," she said.
Bridging Generations: A Resource for All
This digital archive not only serves historians and genealogists but also resonates deeply with younger generations eager to connect with their roots. Families from local municipalities such as Andover Borough, Sparta Township, and Frankford Township now have the opportunity to engage with their heritage in tangible ways through printed stories of the past, enriching their understanding of the present.
A Celebration of New Jersey's Legacy
REV 250 plays a crucial role in celebrating New Jersey’s contributions to American history.
