Coriell Institute's Vision for the Future of Life Sciences
On October 9, 2025, the Coriell Institute for Medical Research, a cornerstone of biomedical research in Camden since 1953, broke ground on its new headquarters and innovation center. This ambitious endeavor, known as the NJ Coriell Labs Innovation Center, is positioned to enhance the institute's critical role in biobanking and life sciences, expected to open its doors in early 2028.
Economic Impact and Job Creation
Governor Phil Murphy emphasized that this new facility will not only further innovative research but also generate around 100 permanent jobs. The project aims to unite promising startups with the Coriell Institute's vast expertise, ensuring that New Jersey remains a leader in the life sciences sector. As Murphy noted, “It will create high quality jobs and unleash a new generation of discovery.”
A Hub for Biotechnology
The state-of-the-art structure will provide 45,000 square feet dedicated to incubating emerging biotech companies, including access to vital laboratory services and biobanking facilities. This both attracts and fosters the growth of innovative enterprises within the field. Mayor Victor G. Carstarphen also remarked on the revitalization of Camden, stating that projects like this serve as a testament to the city’s commitment to economic growth.
The Legacy of Biobanking
The Coriell Institute is renowned for its extensive human biobanking collections, critical for research into myriad diseases. As noted by Dr. Jean-Pierre Issa, the president of the institute, the new facility will allow for expanded research capacities and potentially establish Camden as a major destination for scientific inquiry. To support ongoing efforts, Coriell is particularly focused on attracting partnerships within the biopharmaceutical sector.
Community and Innovation
As Congressman Donald Norcross stated, this initiative represents a historic partnership between the New Jersey Economic Development Authority and local institutions, underscoring Camden’s growing reputation as a center of innovation in South Jersey. By fostering collaborations with both local and international researchers, Coriell leverages its rich history to pave the way for future discoveries.
This investment marks a significant milestone not only for the Coriell Institute but for Camden itself, illustrating how anchor institutions can drive prosperity and innovation in urban environments.
