Honoring Heritage: Columbus Day Celebration in Sparta NJ
SPARTA, NJ – This past Saturday, UNICO members and local friends gathered at the monument park near Dykstra Pavilion to celebrate Columbus Day, an occasion marked by the raising of the Italian flag. Among the attendees were notable figures such as Knights of Columbus members: Gil Gibbs, Kevin Grice, Gary D’Uva, Assembly Commander Bob Springer, Frank Mimolo, Laura D’Uva, James Trusa, and Sparta Police Officer Harry Chewing. The event brought together community members to honor their Italian heritage.
Upcoming Parade: A March of Pride
Laura D’Uva, an active member of UNICO, shared that approximately 250 members would be participating in the Columbus Day Parade in New York City on Monday. This year's parade is particularly special as it coincides with the nation’s 250th anniversary. The group is also anticipating the presence of the national president of UNICO at the parade, making it an event of significance for the organization.
Several attendees expressed their intention to attend the Mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral before the parade. This additional ritual illustrates the intertwining of culture and faith within the community, creating a solemn yet festive atmosphere for this important day.
Remembering a Leader: A Moment of Reflection
As the Italian flag flew proudly, the American flag was at half-staff, reflecting a note of sorrow for State Senator Sandra Bolden Cunningham, who passed away recently. This gesture, ordered by Acting Governor Nicholas Scutari, underscores the duality of celebration and remembrance that often accompany significant cultural events. It serves as a reminder of both community pride and the loss of public servants dedicated to their roles.
The Significance of UNICO’s Values
UNICO, which translates to "unique" in Italian, embodies principles of Unity, Neighborliness, Integrity, Charity, and Opportunity. These tenets reinforce the organization's commitment to not only honoring Italian heritage but also fostering community ties and supporting charitable efforts. Local residents interested in joining the movement or attending the upcoming meeting on October 21 can reach out via email at SpartaUnico@gmail.com.
The connection among the attendees at Dykstra Park symbolizes the vibrancy of the Sussex County community, encouraging participation and unity during times of celebration and commemoration alike. Columbus Day holds a unique place in New Jersey, particularly in Sparta, serving as a reminder of the contributions of Italian-Americans to the cultural fabric of the area.
